Space Week & Zoo Field Trip

Morning Meeting
We explored Space and focused on the Moon and planets through picture books and videos on Brain Pop Jr.  Also, the Magic School Bus has a fascinating episode about the students traveling to space and exploring the moon rocks and Saturn.

Centers
In language arts we switched gears to finish our caterpillar journals. It was exciting to see the chrysalis hatch to butterflies in the classroom! I know the kids enjoyed coming in each day to check on the butterflies.  In their journals, the children observed the butterflies and drew a picture based of these observations.  Some students were challenged to write a word or sentence to match the picture.

In math the kids had a board with numbers on different rocket ships.  They identified the number and counted unifix cubes to build a ‘rocket ship’.

The kiddos became astronauts and experienced drawing upside down working against gravity.

Animal memory- The children did an awesome job taking turns and cooperatively playing together.

Exploring the Z00- The children were fantastic and troopers for the field trip!  Despite the cold weather, the kiddos had a smile on their faces and were excited to visit the animal exhibits.  I am SO proud of them for being well behaved and following their parent leaders and making it a great day!

FUN in the SUN J

Sunday, May 7, 2017

This week we learned about the life cycle of a butterfly.  We observed the caterpillars in our classroom and will keep a close eye in the upcoming weeks, so we can witness the changes they will undergo!

The children will see the caterpillar preparing for its transformation by attaching itself with silk and hanging in a ‘J’ shape.  This shows us the caterpillar is getting ready for the next stage…a chrysalis!

In Morning meeting, the kiddos used their bodies to act out the butterfly’s life cycle.  Our favorite story was, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle. I would find the children all week pulling this story from the shelf and using the pictures to reenact the story with a friend.

Centers

Language Arts- This week the children began their caterpillar observation journals.

Also, the kiddos practiced finding the missing sound in CVC words.

Math- The children created their own pattern using insect manipulatives.  Next, they recreated the pattern using beads to create a caterpillar.

Journals

The children sharing their Flutter journal.
