The snow is finally here! I know many have been waiting for the much anticipated first snowfall of the year.  The children were looking forward to it as well!  Please keep in mind we will be going outside to play in the cold weather, so please bring hats, gloves, boots and snow pants when the time comes!

This week we discussed the meaning of Thanksgiving by reading many stories and watching a video.  We made a list together with pictures of what we were thankful for.  Here is a look at our activities this week!
Fun outside playing in the leaves!
Centers

Language Arts-  We read a story titled, Thanksgiving is.. The kiddos circled the popcorn word ‘is’ and  ‘I’.  We continue to use our reading finger as we track the letters and words.  Also, we finished the prompt; ‘I am thankful for’ and wrote the beginning sounds or word!  These pictures are on display in the classroom next to the handprint turkeys.

Math-  The kiddos worked with partners and the goal was to independently sequence the numbers 1 to10.  Next, they built towers with unifix cubes next to the corresponding number.  They did a great job!

Also, we cut and glued Thanksgiving pictures to complete numerous patterns.

Fine Motor- The children counted close pins to match the number on the turkey’s body.

Art- Handprint turkeys! The kiddos were all smiles when they could get messy with the paint.

Dragons Love Tacos!

The Pre-K children had a fantastic week completing hands on projects and learning about the author Adam Rubin.  We read a variety of stories including: Dragons Love Tacos, Robo Sauce, Those Darn Squirrels and Secret Pizza Party.  This weeks focus was creativity and the kiddos explored a variety of projects keying in on a wide range of skills.

Field Trip to the Apollo Theater!  The story, Dragons Love Tacos was brought to life.

The children making robots from recyclable products.

The kiddos sequenced pictures showing how to make a taco with many toppings.

Practicing their fine motor skills tearing construction paper to make their own pizza.  This project worked on executive functions and following two-step directions.

Fun in the dramatic play area, puzzles and trains.

Our fifth grade reading buddies visited the PK class and read stories to the kiddos.

Morning Meeting
The kiddos listened to a variety of spider stories including both fiction and non-fiction. We made a class chart together brainstorming words to describe spiders. Spiders can, are and have were the sentence starters we used. Also, the children did a nice job making their own spiders following 1-2 step directions. The glyphs are displayed in the classroom. A highlight from this week was building a giant spider web with rope.  The children worked together and had to carefully maneuver their way through the web without getting caught.

Centers
Language Arts- Emergent reader spider story.  The children circled sight words and letters.  Also, math skills were tied into the book where the children had to recognize the number and draw the correct corresponding spiders on the page with dot stamps.

Also, we dove into IPads this week with the letter factory and introduced the Bob series apps with games that coincide with the characters from the books.

Math- Children match the corresponding shapes on spider webs.

Art- Spider glyphs

Fine motor- lacing cards

Journals- ‘Spiders like to..’  We brainstormed a few ideas together.

Circle time
We met our zoo friends Kayo Kangaroo and Lizzy Lizard. Also, we sang a new song (sung to the tune of I'm A Little Teapot):

I’m a little spider,
Watch me spin.
If you’ll be my dinner,
I’ll let you come in.
Then I’ll spin my web to hold you tight.
And gobble you up in one big bite!

Creepy, Crawly Spiders

What a fabulous week we had in Pre-K! The Halloween centers and Carnival ran so smoothly and the children were engaged in a variety of games, art activities, and even a moon bounce!  It was exciting to see how independent the children were and willing to try new activities.  Thank you to the parents who volunteered in the classroom and for bringing in a creative costume for your child. I appreciate all of your hard work. The children loved dressing up and sharing their costume to friends.  There were many laughs and good times shared this week.

Carnival and Fall Party memories J

We visited the Upper School science lab and were scientists drawing spooky messages and making slime!
Lila was the Star of the Week and was thrilled to share her pictures about her family, favorite foods, and favorite color pink!

Centers

Language Arts-The kiddos played a letter matching game and letter splat with fly swatters.

Math- The children played a game using a tens frame, spinner, and spider chips.  They had to add the correct number of chips to fill up their board to make ten.  This activity was great for counting on and seeing how many more chips they needed to get to ten.

Fine motor- They made spider webs weaving yarn.  This activity focused on hand and eye coordination and fine motor skills.  To complete the web the children created spiders to add to their web.

Art- We discussed this week how spiders have spinnerets to release silk so they can build webs catching their prey. With glitter, the kiddos made their own spider webs. Their pictures are displayed on the outside bulletin board.

Journal- The prompt was, ‘If I was a spider, I would..’ The children were adding eight legs and eyes to their spider bodies in the picture and were able to dictate a story in 1-2 sentences.

Next week

We will continue our spider unit.  Also, conferences are this week.  If you have not signed up please schedule a time with either Melinda or me.
